Position Summary

Congregation Beth Shalom is a warm, diverse Jewish community, located in the vibrant and progressive college town of Bloomington, Indiana. Our congregation is seeking a part-time Jewish Education Director to oversee the education of children and youth by administering the Religious School, family programming, teen programming, and PJ Library. With energy and enthusiasm, the Director will create a cohesive, nurturing, and educational environment that promotes Jewish values, fosters a strong identity and facilitates a connection to Israel. The Director will develop and maintain formal and informal educational programs that will impart deep knowledge of Torah, Jewish history and culture, Hebrew language, and prayer. The education will instill students with a commitment to social justice, tikkun olam, and tzedakah. The Director will bring a collaborative spirit in order to involve students, teachers, families, volunteers, and professional and lay leadership in the planning, programming and implementation of educational programs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Curriculum Development

-Establish the overall vision for the religious school (30+ children in grades k-7) that aligns with the Beth Shalom mission and culture and develop a curriculum accordingly In consultation with the Rabbi, set curriculum benchmarks, goals, and objectives along with evaluation standards for each grade level in Judaica and Hebrew.
-Support teachers to develop weekly lesson plans and activities that meet curriculum goals
-Select and prepare textbooks and resource materials.

Educational Programming

-Supervise and facilitate youth and family programming including, but not limited to, holiday celebrations, family Shabbat programs, tot Shabbat, and special grade-level activities
-Coordinate teen programming in collaboration with the Rabbi and parents
-Administer the PJ Library program, including community outreach and specific programming

Educational Administration

-Supervise and collaborate with education staff and volunteers, including and not limited to recruitment, selection, training, and management of all religious school personnel. Conduct regularly scheduled meetings for staff.
-Communicate regularly with religious school families and appropriate community members about educational programming and activities
-Oversee inventory, purchase of supplies, and maintenance of school equipment and furniture.
-Monitor enrollment and participation in all programs outlined above and prepare the annual Religious School budget in consultation with the treasurer.
-Provide regular enrollment reports regarding retention and budgetary matters for the Beth Shalom board in collaboration with the treasurer.
-Prepare and distribute payroll for staff.

Desired Qualifications

-Deep knowledge of Jewish religious practice, history, and culture.
-A bachelor’s degree in education or related field or commensurate experience.
-Experience in educational program administration at the elementary and/or secondary level.
-Previous supervisory experience.
-Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
-Proficient in Hebrew language and prayer service preferred

Job Details

Start Date: July 1st, 2024

Time Commitment: average of 20 hours per week, with high degree of flexibility over the summer

Compensation: $20,000-$25,000, commensurate with experience

Work environment: Hybrid position, must be present at Religious School sessions (approx. September through April) and other community programs
